The Garden on the Left Hand
From 13. May to
29. May
14:00 to 20:00

Significantly influenced by the German thinker Walter Benjamin and the French painter Henri Matisse, Takumi Kikuchi has kept his painting style by measuring the distance between his work and the events he has experienced. In this exhibition, he does not change his artistic approach but presents works that are strongly influenced by the work of the 15th-century Italian painter Fra Angelico.
The title 'The Garden of the Left Hand', derives from Didi-Hubermann's essay. According to his book Fra Angelico: Mystical Theology and Pictorial Expression, Angelico's works often depict a garden on the left side, which is overlaid with an image of a lost paradise.
Kikuchi feels an 'insurmountable distance' between himself and the 'garden = paradise' that Angelico approached, and through his creation, he measures the distance between his own present location and the 'garden'. The means to do this is to wipe off the paint with a brush once it has been applied. While feeling hesitant about approaching "Paradise", he tries to bring out the image that has now been snatched away by "wiping".
